Sporting mega-events like the FIFA World Cup 2026 operate on a large scale and involve global economic, political, cultural, and social interests. At the same time, they directly impact on the daily lives of those who live in the host cities, not only during the event but also in the preceding months, marked by public infrastructure projects and private investments. This paper proposes using the concept of urban extractivism to understand the socio-environmental impact of the World Cup in Mexico City from an ethnographic perspective. It explores the experiences and knowledge of residents of the neighborhoods surrounding the Azteca Stadium, and concludes with a reflection on extractivism and socio-environmental justice.
